Your Guide to Dunk Island

Fun in the sea at Dunk IslandUpdate: due to the extensive damage caused by Cyclone Yasi, Dunk Island Resort is closed for major repairs and rebuilding.

It is not at this stage possible to give a date for the reopening of  the resort but based on current assessments it is likely to be around April 2012. More updates to follow.

In the meantime, plenty of accommodation is available in the Whitsundays and elsewhere.

Dunk Island is a truly breath-taking island in Queensland, located just across the water from South Mission Beach on the mainland, approximately 140 KM south of Cairns.

As part of the Family Islands National Park it enjoys a protected status, as is evidenced by picture-perfect beaches, sparkling blue water and amazing tropical flora & fauna. Whether you are looking for an exciting trip full of fun activities, a romantic getaway or just a peaceful relaxing break from the stresses of everyday life, you will find it here.

Dunk Island weddings and receptionsDunk Island Weddings
It’s no surprise Dunk Island has become such a popular place for weddings: apart from the island’s stunning natural beauty, there are a wealth of facilities available for the wedding ceremony and the reception. Plus, the resort’s staff are highly experienced in taking the hard work out making all the arrangements and helping create an unforgettable experience.

Around 75% of the island is officially national park, so it is the perfect place to take in the wonders of nature. A walk through the rainforest will let you experience some of the diverse native wildlife, and a hike to the top of Mount Kootaloo will give you a spectacular panoramic view of the island and beyond.

Finally, a little trivia: the island was used as a location in Michael Powell’s 1969 film “Age of Consent”, which starred James Mason and Helen Mirren.

Getting here is easy: there are regular flights to Dunk Island Airport from Cairns and most Australian capital cities, or you can take a ferry from Mission Beach.
